JAGANNATH – PURI

Puri: Lord Krishna’s heart:
The Puri temple is also famous because many legends believe that Krishna’s heart was placed there and the material that it is made from damages the heart so they have to change it every seven years. The temple is sacred to all Hindus, and especially to those of the Vaishnava traditions.
Jagannath: Lord Ram’s family deity
Both the Ramayana and Mahabharata also mention Lord Jagannath. In the Ramayana Lord Ram tells Vibhishan that Jagannath is the family deity of his Ikshvaku clan. Then Vibhishan is said to have composed a hymn praising the god and even today there is a ritual in the temple called ‘Vibhishan bandana’.

Land in Bhubaneswar and travel to Puri (60 km)
Check in and take some rest, today we will go slow and explore some nearby places in the evening.
Puri Beach, also known as Golden Beach, is one of the finest coastlines in East India, bordering the Bay of Bengal. It is often flocked by devotees visiting the beach for a purification dip who come to Puri to pay their homage to Lord Jagannath. The beach is also renowned for the sand sculptures made by internationally-known sand artist Sudarshan Patnaik.
Lokanath Temple is an ancient temple located in the Puri town. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, it is one of the most important Shiva shrines of Odisha. The unique feature of this temple is that the Shiva linga is always submerged with water. It can only be seen on Pankodhar Ekadasi, before Shivaratri, when the water is comparatively clearer.v

Day 2: 24 Feb
Jagannath Temple Aarti
Dwarpitha and Mangal Aarti at 5 AM(optional)
Jagannath Temple (9am)

It took three generations’ worth of time and effort to brick up the humongous walls of the famous Puri’s Jagannath Temple located in Odisha. The temple is of utmost importance to the Hindu devotees as it is one of the Char-Dham Pilgrimages. It also serves as a mighty historical structure built about millennia ago, in the year 1078. Millions of people visit Odisha to gain Lord Jagannath blessings.

The temple is famous for its annual Rath Yatra which is witnessed by millions as the three colossal chariots carry the deities. The English word Juggernaut shares its origin from this annual parade. But that’s not the sole speciality of the place! Some enigmatic activities without any scientific explanations have caught the travellers eye worldwide.

Mystery of the temple:
There are two mysteries present at the pinnacle of the temple in the form of the Sudarshan Chakra. The first oddity revolves around the theory of how the hard metal weighing about a tonne, just got up there without any machinery just with a human force of that century.
The second is one deals with the architectural technique related to the Chakra. From every direction you look, the Chakra looks back with the same appearance. It’s like it was designed to look just the same from every direction.
Raghurajpur Craft Village
It goes without saying that consider your trip to Puri incomplete if you skip the visit to Raghurajpur Craft Village, as one of the best things to do at Puri at night is considered to be shopping. Buy the world-famous Pattachitra paintings at prices which are a steal. The paintings are on treated cloth or dried palm leaves or paper. Evenings since late-night remain fun-filled and completely exciting.
Sunset :
This is one of the most prominent points of interest around the city of Puri. The beach is enveloped within a forest cover, adding an exotic element to it. Travellers make it a point to visit this beach for unlimited fun and entertainment. Mahashivaratri festival is celebrated with great fervour at the temple nearby and is visited by thousands of devotees during the festival.

Day 3: 25 Feb
Konark Sun Temple
Sun Temple of Konark, built in the middle of 13th century, is a massive conception of artistic magnificence and engineering dexterity. King Narasimhadeva I, the great ruler of the Ganga dynasty had built this temple, with the help of 1200 artisans within a period of 12 years (1243-1255 A.D.). Since the ruler used to worship the Sun, the temple was considered as a chariot for the Sun God. Konark Temple was designed in the form of a gorgeously decorated chariot mounted on 24 wheels , each about 10 feet in diameter, and drawn by 7 mighty horses. It is really difficult to understand, how this huge temple, every inch-space of which was so wonderfully carved, could have been completed within such a short time. Whatever that might be, the konark temple even in its present ruined state, still a wonder to the whole world. Great poet Rabindranath Tagore wrote of Konark: “Here the language of stone surpasses the language of man”.
Chilika Lake cruise /Boat ride (OTDC Ferry ghat):
Today we will go to Chilika Lake to experience the beauty of Lake Chilika and try our luck to see dolphins.
Chilika Lake, located in Odisha is a pear-shaped saltwater lake spreading across around 1100 square kilometres. It is the largest saltwater lagoon in Asia and the second largest in the world. Connected to the Bay of Bengal by a 32 kilometres long and 1.5 kilometres wide channel, the exact location of Chilika Lake is in the middle of coastal Odisha.v
Allarnath Temple (if we have time )
Lord Alarnath temple in Brahmagiri, around 25 km from Puri, is not a big tourist destination but a famous religious place for all Krishna devotees. It is explained that in Satya Yuga, Lord Brahma came and worshipped Lord Vishnu here on top of a hill. One day Lord Vishnu appeared and said, “I am very pleased with your worship. Make a four-armed Deity of Me holding shankha, chakra, gada, and padma (conch shell, disk, club, and lotus). The Deity should be made from a piece of black stone. Also install a Deity of Garuda”. Lord Vishnu also said, “This place will be called Brahmagiri (Brahma’s hill) because you have worshipped me here”. According to mythology, the rulers of Alwar in Rajasthan had established the temple here. The temple was later known as Alwarnath or Alarnath.
