Varkala

Perched almost perilously along the edge of majestic 49ft- (15m) high red laterite cliffs, 31 miles (50km) northwest of Trivandrum, Varkala has a naturally beautiful setting that has allowed it to steadily grow into Kerala’s most popular backpacker hang-out. A small strand of golden beach nuzzles Varkala’s North Cliff area, where restaurants play innocuous music and shops sell elephant-stamped trousers, silver jewellery and cotton yoga-mat bags.

 

Alleppey

Alappuzha – most still call it Alleppey – is the hub of Kerala’s backwaters, home to a vast network of waterways, over a thousand houseboats and an important coir industry. Wandering around the small but chaotic city centre, with its modest grid of canals, you’d be hard-pressed to agree with the ‘Venice of the East’ tag, and, sadly, at research time a hulking new highway flyover was marring the beauty of Alleppey’s popular beach.

Explore Siva Giri Mutt, and start to Alleppey Drive boat, 3 hours (107kms)

Jatayu Earth’s Center

Taking you up and down the world’s largest bird Sculpture is an array of Swiss-made cable cars, of the standards found nowhere else in Kerala. Dangle over the Jatayu Earth’s Center with a bird’s eye- view of the locale. Be mesmerized by the virtues of Nature and the stunning scenery that offers you the best of Kerala.
