We will cover the La Tomatina festival in Valencia, Scuba diving in Lloret de Mar,  road trips and skydiving in Costa Brava.

La Tomatina is a food fight festival held on the last Wednesday of August each year in the town of Buñol near to Valencia in Spain. Thousands upon thousands of people make their way from all corners of the world to fight in this ‘World’s Biggest Food Fight’ where more than one hundred metric tons of over-ripe tomatoes are thrown in the streets.

Prior to 2013 anywhere from 40,000 to 50,000 (reported to be 50,000 in 2012) people crammed into this huge tomato fight, greatly expanding Bunol’s normal 9,000-person population. Since 2013 official ticketing has been in place limiting the number of participants to just 20,000 lucky people.

What Happens at La Tomatina

At around 11 am many trucks haul the bounty of tomatoes into the centre of the town, Plaza del Pueblo. The tomatoes come from Extremadura, where they are less expensive. Technically the festival does not begin until one brave soul has climbed to the top of a two-story high, greased-up wooden pole and reached the coveted ham at the top. In practice, this process takes a long time and the festival starts despite no one reaching the meaty prize. The signal for the beginning of the fight is the firing of water cannons, and the chaos begins. Once it begins, the battle is generally every man for himself.

After one hour, the fighting ends. At this point, no more tomatoes can be thrown. The cleaning process involves the use of fire trucks to spray down the streets, with water provided from a Roman aqueduct. The authorities seem more concerned with cleaning the town than cleaning the visitors, so some people find water at the Bunol River to wash, although some kind residents will hose passers-by down. Once the tomato pulp is flushed, the ground is clean due to the acidity of the tomato.

Useful Advice

• Wear closed shoes that you do not mind throwing away afterwards. If you wear flip-flops, you may get hurt, or you could lose them easily during the battle
• Wear old clothes, or clothes that you are not planning to wear again. They will most likely end up damaged from being ripped or incredibly dirty
• You may find goggles useful. However, it is safer if you just ensure that you always have something clean to wipe your eyes with. The best thing is if you tuck your T-shirt into your shorts to keep the bottom part of your T-shirt clean and dry
• If you are planning to take pictures, bring a waterproof camera!
• If you are not from Bunol, and you want to stay overnight, don’t forget to look for and secure accommodation in advance
• Do not miss the Palojabon – a greased pole with a Spanish ham at the top. Whoever can climb the pole and get the ham can keep it!
• Stay safe and enjoy the festivities as much as possible

Day 3: Barcelona

Today we will reach Barcelona by bus. Reach Barcelona and check in at the hostel, today we plan is to explore Camp Nau.

Camp Nou was built between 1954 and 1957 and officially opened on the 24th of September 1957 with a match between FC Barcelona and a selection of players from the city of Warsaw.

The stadium replaced Barcelona’s previous ground Camp de les Corts, which, though it could hold 60,000 supporters, was still too small for the growing support of the club.

Camp Nou initially consisted of two tiers that could hold 93,000 spectators. It was first called Estadi del FC Barcelona but got soon referred to as Camp Nou.

 

Day 4: Barcelona

Gothic Quarter: Kabir searches for his father, Salman Habib

The first stop in the Born Quarter is to get some breakfast with churros con chocolate. This Spanish staple is a tasty deep-fried doughy pastry that’s dipped in rich, creamy chocolate. If you’re vegan or gluten-free, there are several allergy-friendly restaurants in Barcelona. Not feeling chocolate? You can order churros without chocolate and enjoy it with coffee instead.

After grabbing breakfast, roam around the asphalt streets of the Born Quarter and head over to the Passeig del Born. This beautiful passage is lined with exquisite eateries that have outdoor seating, overhanging trees, and cosy shops. In this area, you’ll also find the Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar, a beautiful medieval Basilica, as well as the Santa Caterina Market. This market is filled with local restaurants, freshly cured meats, delectable cheeses, fruits, and vegetables.

In the Gothic Quarter, you’ll also find the bustling streets of La Rambla, which is filled with street performers, tall trees, and streets overflowing with outdoor dining and shopping. About halfway up La Rambla is an eye-catching market called Mercado de La Boqueria. This alluring outdoor market is jam-packed with sweet-smelling fruits, candied nuts, and freshly baked traditional Spanish goods. You’ll find croquetas, empanadas, mini-sandwiches, and several eateries to grab tapas (a hearty snack), or enjoy a late lunch.

This is generally considered to be the city centre.

Day 5 : Costa Brava

Today, we will move to Costa Brava by bus or train to re-live some of the most beautiful parts of the ZNMD.

With an arresting scenery and sparkling Mediterranean coastline, the Spanish region of Costa Brava ticks all the boxes for a sun-soaked getaway. Tucked away in the northeastern corner of Catalonia, it stretches from the French border all the way to the ‘Costa Brava gateway’ of Blanes. Once in the shadows of the more touristy Costas of mainland Spain, in-the-know travellers have been taking holidays in Costa Brava since the sixties. With a treasure trove of fishing villages and lively seaside towns, Costa Brava, aka the ‘Wild Coast’, has so much to offer.

We will explore Costa Brava town like locals.

Calella de Palafrugell

You will feel a bit like stepping into the 70s when you come around the corner and lay eyes on the retro colour palette of the doors or the whole vibe.Calella de Palafrugell.

The ancient fishing village has several beach areas and coves perfect for a day of swimming and lounging on the beach. Along the beach, you’ll find many restaurants and viewpoints.

Day 6: Lloret de Mar

Lloret de Mar, a town on the Costa Brava in Spain’s Catalonia region, is known for its Mediterranean beaches. The medieval hilltop Castle of Sant Joan, to the east, offers views over the area, while the central Iglesia de Sant Romà church provides examples of both Catalan Gothic and modernist architecture. On a cliff overlooking the sea, the Santa Clotilde Gardens were built in the style of the Italian Renaissance.

We will go to the same beach, where Laila met Kabir, Imran and Arjun. To make it more interesting, you can do the optional scuba dive and explore the underwater world.

Day 7 & 8: Barcelona

Today, we will reach back to Barcelona and catch a flight to our next destination to Seville.

Just 20 minutes from the city centre of Seville, you can go skydiving and feel the adrenaline rush of seeing the Andalusian capital from the clouds.

Parachute one minute of pure adrenaline in freefall with a professional skydiving instructor and enjoy the magnificent views of Seville. Then your guide will open the parachute and you will descend for about 5-8 minutes. You will feel the speed of 200km/h in the free fall.

 

Day 9: Fly back with memories

You can either come back to India with happy memories or continue with us on our extended trip to Ibiza, the party capital of the world.

 

Day 10,11 & 12-Ibiza

Ibiza is all about road trips and parties so we will be doing daily parties and you will realize why people fly from U.S to party in Ibiza.
