Before We go forward, let’s understand what kind of cruise goes to Antarctica:
1. Why Antarctica?
I mean why not, in the lower part of the world, the South pole, a place which plays a major in the world’s weather and the topmost for most of the traveller’s bucket list?
2. From which country to start the journey?
Argentina is the closest port to Antarctica so major cruises start from Ushuaia. Else Chile also provides cruises but those are costly so try for Argentina only.
3. What type of Antarctica trips are there and what is the difference?
Luxury Cruise Line :
ANTARCTICA has two types of cruises, one is luxury cruise lines, where you travel with >1000 people and live like in a luxury hotel but
No landing on Antarctica
No zodiacs
Days range from 10-14
cost: 5000-6000$
these cruises are cheap and take you to Antarctica and you see it but cannot touch it .
Expedition Cruises:
These cruise lines are small ships and Carry 100-200 max on one journey. These are not too much luxury or if they are they charge you a bomb.
Unlike Luxury cruises these cruises allow you to
Land on Antarctica
Camping for one night
Kayaking in Antarctica
Whale watching (close calls)
Hike on Antarctica till the Penguin colony
Cost: 10000-13000$
so here you can see the major difference between these cruises, the major is costing part and most of the travellers focus on cost only.
Daywise Itinerary
DAY 1 | ARRIVE IN USHUAIA, ARGENTINA
You will begin your journey in Ushuaia, a small but bustling port town at the tip of South America. This Argentine town
is an ideal gateway for you to explore the southern extent of Patagonia while preparing for your adventure ahead. Get active in the mountains or enjoy handcrafted chocolate at a café in town.
DAY 2 | EMBARK
DAYS 3 & 4 | CROSSING THE DRAKE PASSAGE
What makes the Drake Passage so infamously rough is the fact that currents at this latitude meet no resistance from any landmass, anywhere on the planet. Coupled with the area’s propensity for high wind, a crossing of the Drake Passage can be quite the adventurous exploit.
DAYS 5–8 | SOUTH SHETLAND ISLANDS & ANTARCTIC PENINSULA
Many parts of the peninsula were named by different countries, usually based on the names of the various explorers involved and this gave rise to some disagreements. It was not until 1966 that the name Antarctic Peninsula was finally internationally agreed but the northern part is still known as Graham Land and the more southerly section as Palmer Land. During the Second World War Britain set up bases here later followed by research stations.
DAYS 9 & 10 | CROSSING THE DRAKE PASSAGE
DAY 11 | DISEMBARK IN USHUAIA
You will arrive in Ushuaia in the morning, which allows you to continue your adventure onward or catch your flights home
